You know what's shocking? I never knew that Anna Nicole Smith was a Playboy centrefold. In fact, I had no idea who she was, even though I'd been hearing her name for well over ten years. I just assumed she was an actress or something. Her name became one of these buzzwords of popular culture. And it's crazy that although her name was all I knew about her, I still stared in disbelief when I heard that she had died.
How does this happen?

I watched Larry King talk about it tonight. It seems that she's had a tragic couple of years. Poor girl.
I just thought of her is the 26 year old who married the 90 year old. Oh, Paula.
People at school were talking about how she had died and I was all uhm, who was she again? I'm totally with you on the whole 'buzz-name of popular culture' label. Look at me, commenting and all...
Also, I lurve your studio, well actually, moreso your work (will you draw me a picture? :P)
three words: mass media culture. You never meet a person, never know anything about them but are somehow reminded that they exist, then one day they don't. They have their own little life independent of themselves on the TV and internet and magazine covers, and each person knows that life to the extent to which they engage the popular outlets. So it's like everyone has their own personal Anna Nicole Smith, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie that they know, even if all that is known is that they are alive.
